Welcome to Old Sailortown

Rinty Monaghan, undeafeated world champion boxer, is perhaps the most famous person who ever lived in Sailortown. No doubt the most famous working visitor to the area was the noble republican socialist James Connolly who was executed by British firing squad in Dublin 1916. The old area fell under the big demolision hammer of the profit crazed speculators. For four years I worked with a committee which sought to have housing replaced in the area to invite back the old residents who had been scattered to the winds under the 're-developement', sadly the multi millionaire speculators and carpetbaggers had their way. I had also worked with a committee for the saving of the old Half Bap and Little Italy area but again the history re-writers and vested interests won through. The latter area is now part of the so called 'Cathedral Quarter', as simple as that out history and heritage was wiped out. In my political life I have witnessed more political activity kick in to have a Zebra Crossing put in place than what motivated by the rape of these old area's.
